Discover how Ayurveda’s Pancha Karma can Help You Lose Weight, Feel Fit, and Revitalize Your Life

You’ve been here before; it’s the end of the holiday season and as the New Year begins, with resolutions drawn up, you sweep away the last of the holiday cookies, pack up the decorations, and restore a bit of, exhale, order and simplicity to your joyful, yet perhaps a bit over-indulgent celebrations.

You may be poking at your waist line saying, “Here we go again”, but your commitment is firm. You stand, resolute. This time, you will win the Bulge Battle. Your email box is swamped with new diet fads, your neighbor swears by diet pills, and your local gym offers half-priced slimming shakes. But something doesn’t settle right…”Are quick-fixes going to do the trick?”

As you survey your options for weight loss, you may realize that you want more than just to lose the weight. For starters, you want to feel fit, energetic, youthful, and light. You want skin that glows with a sheen of health. And yet your cravings are more then skin deep; you want a feeling of inner peace, calm, and balance. What you really want is to come home to the comfort and peace of your body available only when health and balance are restored.

Not only are quick-fix diet fads not the solution to creating inner peace in the body, but they are often not sustainable and result in a yo-yo approach to dieting that can wreak havoc on the body and mind.

This year, try something different. I would venture to say, even revolutionary except for the fact that this method for wellness is over 5,000 years old. Born alongside the invention of the written word, Ayurveda, is the science of life and offers a beautiful opportunity for health in the form of Pancha Karma, a deeply rejuvenating detox and cleanse.

Pancha Karma is the traditional Ayurvedic practice for detoxifying and purifying the mind, body, and spirit. Pancha Karma means “five therapies” and is comprised of 5 therapeutic detox regimens that hit the proverbial “reset button” on your health. The five therapies of Pancha Karma help to remove deeply rooted stress and illness from your life.

A thorough Pancha Karma rids the physical and emotional bodies of environmental toxins and metabolic waste matter before any apparent signs and symptoms of illness emerge. As subtle blockages are gently released from the tissues and channels of the body, excess doshic energies are diminished allowing the body and mind to function in a balanced state of health.

Regarded as an indispensable tool for preventing disease and safe-guarding the innate balance of the body, Pancha Karma is a truly potent preventative practice (say that 10 ten times fast).

Historically, only the wealthy and those with royal blood underwent Pancha Karma to increase longevity and boost vitality. Now, a rapidly increasing number of people are choosing Ayurveda and Pancha Karma to support their preventative health needs.

Pancha Karma is powerful enough to reverse the signs of aging, build the strength of the physical tissues, boost the immune system, improve digestive function, nourish the nervous system, and, for some people, dispel the signs and symptoms of already existing disease. At the end of a Pancha Karma program, the physical and emotional bodies are renewed and restored leaving you feeling energized, fit, and at peace.

Not only will you feel better on the inside, performing a Pancha Karma will help you shed excess weight, add a healthy luster to your skin, and bring about a profound and lasting rejuvenation.

Following an (indulgent) holiday season it is typical to want to return to a state of balance. This year, try something sustainable with lasting benefits that will carry you through the year (and beyond).

Whether Pancha Karma is done at home or in an Ayurvedic Clinic the same basic elements will be involved.

A Pancha Karma regimen includes 3 parts:

1) Poorva Karma – Preparation
Following a thorough evaluation, dietary and herbal recommendations are provided to prepare the body and mind for the upcoming detoxification and cleanse.

Herbs are recommended that are specific to a person’s constitution (dosha). Typically, Triphala is prescribed for a least 3 days to begin building a digestive fire (Agni) and eliminating some of the Ama (toxins).

This phase of Pancha Karma is considered to be the backbone of the therapy. For some individuals it is indicated as the main treatment rather than just a preparatory procedure.

2) Pancha Karma – the “Five Therapies”
In Pancha Karma, diet and herbal therapy continue while individualized therapies work to release the toxins from the deep layers of the body and eliminate them out of the body. The Ayurvedic physician will determine which of the five actions are best suited for your needs.

1. Vamana – This therapy is a medicated emesis process administered orally. It removes Kapha toxins that have collected in the body and the respiratory tract. Vamana is recommended mainly for people with high Kapha imbalance. Daily treatment involves loosening and mobilizing the toxins in an effort to ultimately eliminate the toxins fully.

Potential Benefits of Vamana: Aids in bronchial asthma, chronic allergies, hay fever, hyperacidity, chronic indigestion, nasal congestion, edema, obesity, psychological disorders, and skin disorders such as psoriasis and vitiligo.

2. Virechana –
This therapy is a medicated purgation process which removes Pitta toxins that have accumulated in the liver and gallbladder. Additionally, this process thoroughly cleanses the gastro-intestinal tract. It is a safe procedure without side effects. Medicine is given orally and after it is digested removes ama due to excess pitta through purgation.

Potential Benefits of Virechana: Aids in reduction of chronic fever, diabetes, asthma, skin disorders such as herpes psoriasis, and vitiligo. May have benefits for paraplegia, hemiplegia, joint disorders, digestive disorders, constipation, hyperacidity, headaches, elephantiasis and certain gynecological disorders.

3. Basti – This therapy is also known as enema or colonic irrigation. Basti is considered the most highly regarded of all Pancha Karma treatments as it cleanses the accumulated toxins from all the 3 doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) through the colon. Basti is also highly beneficial as a rejuvenating treatment.

Potential Benefits of Basti – hemiplegia, paraplegia, colitis, cervical spondylosis, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, digestive disorders, backache & sciatica, hepatomegaly & splenomegaly, obesity, hemorrhoids, sexual debility, and infertility.

4. Sneha Vasti or Anuvasana Vasti – Is nourishing and can be administered for joint pain or for someone requiring more general nourishment for their body, mind, and soul.

5. Nasaya – This therapy cleanses the nose through the administration of medicated oil. It removes impurities due to accumulated Kapha toxins, from neck and head region. Depending on individual needs, this treatment is given up to 30 days.

Potential Benefits of Nasya: trigeminal neuralgia, Bell’s Palsy, poor memory, poor vision, insomnia, excess mucus, hyper pigmentation of the face, pre-mature graying of the hair, headaches, hemiplegia, loss of smell and/or taste, frozen shoulder, migraine, neck stiffness, allergies, nasal polyp, neurological dysfunctions, paraplegia, and sinusitis.

3) Rasayana – Rejuvenation
Once the detox is complete, the body and mind are ready to build new, healthy tissues. You will emark on an individualized wellness plan complete with diet and herbal guides as well as recommendations for lifestyle and seasonal practices. Over the subsequent months you will continue to see the wonderful effects of the Pancha Karma as it reveals its full benefits and sustains your balance and wellbeing.
