How The Biomechanical Running Analysis Works

A full biomechanical running analysis will provide you with an individualized profile of your runners gait and form, efficiency, unique strengths & flexibility. It also includes hands-on care to get you back stronger than before so that future injuries can be prevented!

You will meet with a licensed physical therapist and running specialist to discuss your goals or concerns and then begin the running analysis. The running analysis includes videos taken from multiple angles to capture your running gait. Afterward, your physical therapist will discuss immediate findings from a clinical and software quantitative analysis. We can then implement immediate corrections and reassess.

Immediately following the gait analysis, we will have a hands-on initial evaluation in the clinic to take a closer look. We will prescribe corrective exercises and education for optimal injury prevention and individualized problem-solving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will this session help me find the right shoes for me?

A: Yes! We use the most recent evidence-based approach along with your unique structural anatomy and biomechanics to make clinical recommendations and provide education on running shoes.

Q: If I have a current injury or pain, should I still book this session?

A: If your injury is chronic / nagging in nature, you can still benefit from a gait analysis to see the root cause! If your pain is more acute and running causes a significant and lasting increase in pain, we recommend a regular initial patient evaluation first to decrease painful symptoms and address areas of need.

Q: Will I need to have another gait analysis again in the future?

A: This depends on your initial findings and results from the first gait analysis. We recognize that every patient is unique and different from each other and therefore have varying outcomes. If your primary findings are more readily changed, then a secondary gait analysis may not be necessary. However, if your primary findings require strengthening and time to alter, we may want to have a secondary gait analysis to check up on your progress!

Q: Will I get personalized snapshots or videos of my running to keep for future reference?

A: Yes! Our goal is to provide you with all of the educational tools, corrective exercises, and resources possible to ensure injury prevention and happy running! Being able to reference back your gait analysis results will be very valuable in case you need a refresher in the future!

Q: Where will the gait analysis take place and what should I wear?

A: The gait analysis will take place at a predetermined location very close to our clinic to allow for a quick trip in between the gait analysis and initial patient evaluation.

Please wear comfortable athletic clothes. We prefer running clothes that are not baggy, long, or dark in color to allow us to see your anatomy the best. Bring the shoes you normally run in, if you have multiple pairs bring them as well so we can potentially see gait differences!

“Running has been a part of my life for years, and my injury I was recovering from prohibited me from doing that activity for over a year. Since trying Alpine Fit a few months ago, I’ve finally been able to live pain free, and start to get back into running. When I got this gait analysis service as an additional resource for my PT, it was instrumental.

I’ve never seen a video of myself running before, and it was a very eye-opening experience to see what I was doing right, but also what could be improved. But what was most impactful for me was the explanation of why I was running the way I was, with visual proof of how various weaknesses and strengths in my body were creating the nuances of my gait. I have short-term items to work on when I go running now, like stride length and posture, but also long term strengthening of certain muscles that will help prevent me from repeating my past injury.

To me, this feels like the next level evaluation and care I was looking for to get a holistic picture of where I’m at physically and what my body does when exerting itself. Being able to run without pain is the end goal of my PT, so having this as a service addresses that exact desire for treatment. ”

“When I heard about the gait analysis at Alpine Fit PT I signed up right away because I love trail running and wanted to learn how my gait might be contributing to my knee pain.

During the analysis, Dr. Ally filmed me running from different angles and used on-screen tools to point out where my gait was inefficient. She highlighted areas for improvement and we discussed corrective exercises I could do to strengthen imbalanced muscles and make posture adjustments. She then filmed me again as I ran with these corrections in mind, and the difference was incredible! Dr. Ally was able to show a side-by-side comparison of the before and after and this was super helpful, and really clicked with me!

Soon after this gait analysis, I was able to apply what I learned in a half marathon mountain race involving 5100 feet of elevation gain and 5000 feet of elevation loss with zero knee pain! This was an incredible experience for me! If you’re a runner of any kind, I highly recommend going through a gait analysis with Alpine Fit PT to gain invaluable information about the way you run and improvements you can make for more efficient, less painful runs!
