What is fitness?
Most of us would agree that we go to the gym to be fitter and healthier, and Crossfit is a powerful exercise methodology that can have a big impact on your physical and mental well-being. At CrossFit Beat here in Boulder, Colorado our definition of fitness is not just the amount or intensity at which you exercise–it’s about overall health, which means being free from chronic illness and injury.
“Nearly every measurable value of health can be placed on a continuum that ranges from sickness to wellness to fitness… Done right, fitness provides a great margin of protection against the ravages of time and disease.”
Why is fitness important?
Being fit (with exemplary results in all the measurable categories listed in the chart above) is the highest end of the continuum. It provides a buffer against sickness, because your body has to first travel back through wellness before it becomes sick. If your body is sick to start, dealing with chronic disease and injury can exhaust your system and leave it vulnerable. In contrast, activities that support fitness (eating well and exercising regularly) can help prevent chronic disease, as well as provide support during traumatic injuries, even an extreme case like Miranda Oldroyd’s.
How diet and exercise work together
Diet and exercise go hand-in-hand when it comes to our health, building us up even when we’re not in the gym. Exercise helps your body improve tolerances to daily wear and tear, helping guard against injury. Proper nutrition supports all that work, giving your body what it needs to repair itself, flush out toxins, ward off infectious diseases, and helping you avoid chronic disease.
Taken over a lifetime, your daily choices help you get and maintain fitness so you can thrive now and in the future.
