So I’ve got this massive turn on to life happening right now.
I whip out of bed in the morning with this incredible energy, race to get my sneaks on, out the door to exercise, can’t wait to get to work because I love what I do.
I’m full-throttle-feel-good all day until I unwind lights out with a whiz bang early-bird style because I can’t wait to do it again!
Where does this massive life turn on come from?
Ok, be warned, it’s not very sexy.
In fact, it’s one of the most un-sexy things you’ve probably ever heard of.
Brace yourself for boring…it’s prevention.
I know. I get it. Total buzz kill.
Prevention is like “Hello, put me to sleep. Can we get any more boring than that!?”
I get it.
Really, I do.
I see it in the resistance-stricken faces of my clients right before they realize that… wait for it…. prevention can be fun!
(And suddenly a giant shame wave comes over me as I’ve become the voice-over for a sweet yet jaded public service announcement… “Really guys! Prevention can be fun!”)
But I’m going to climb back up to place prevention on a pedestal and ALSO say that you’d be hard pressed to prove me otherwise.
At first glance there’s nothing overtly sexy about prevention per se…
No, prevention isn’t strutting her stuff with a big plunging neckline, teetering in stilettos and a seductively high hemline.
And yet, prevention also isn’t sticking her nose up to fun wearing a turtleneck and blending into the background of life.
Quite the opposite.
Prevention is all about feeling filled up and fabulous (whilst knowing that she wants (many) more fun-filled days to come)!
She catches glances at the party not because of the cut of her dress but the way she moves, radiates, and lights up a room.
She is the definition of sexy.
Prevention isn’t about going in fast and furious and burning out all flash-in-the-pan style.
She loves her life. She wants to live it feeling as fabulous as she can for as long as she can.
And, she knows that the habits she curates and sticks to now in a fun, yet focused kind of way will pay off for her now and in the future.
She’s decided that while there are plenty of things out of her control she’s going to do the things she can do “prevent” unwanted illness, disease, and suffering whilst living the heck out of life and having a damn good time doing it.
So, a while back prevention and I got to talking and we decided to team up.
And while I was never a supremely reckless lass I had some things to learn on the self care front.
I’m going to share with you the top 5 Prevention Practices that have helped me feel this massive life turn on day in and day out.

5 Prevention Practices for Life Turn Ons:
1. The 5 Minute Spa Routine:
This practice is about distilling the utterly blissful spa experience into 5 minutes of evening-time self care. To practice set aside 5 pre-bedtime minutes to indulge in any number of spa-like rituals: a lavendar essential oil foot soak, a mini self massage or foot rub using your favorite lotion, a yin-style yoga stretch by candle light, or cozying up with a good book and a mug of peppermint tea. Then, wrap yourself in your terry cloth robe and head to the next practice…
2. Sweet Early Sleep:
Oh sweet early sleep. This is one of my favorites. But careful now! It plays tug-of-war with any number of online options (Netflix!). BUT, when you succomb to the beautiful tug of sleep what wonderous feelings await. Seriously, string together 3 early-to-bed evenings and you will be dancing your way out of bed without an alarm clock. Ooh la la wouldn’t that be nice? Nicer than Netflix?
3. Move & Shine:
This practice gets you up moving and a shaking. It’s imperative. Movement wakes us up. Movement gets our heart beating, blood pumping, breath moving. Movement wakes up the mind, sweeps up from sleep mode to fully turned on mode. So, for at least 5 early morning minutes get moving. Here are some ideas – dance to 3 songs, do 20 squats, 20 lunges, 20 push ups and 20 crunches, roll out the yoga mat for 9 sun salutations, or do 10 flights of stairs. It doesn’t matter what you do as long as you get moving. So get creative and get moving!
4. Holy Hydration:
Before breakfast down 1000 ml of water (roughly 2 large glasses). Flush out your digestive system and treat your body to the easiest daily detox ever. Your body craves water and thrives most when well hydrated. For a bonus, repeat this practice twice more during your day. Sip down 1000 ml of water and flush your gut between breakfast and lunch and then again between lunch and dinner.
5. Happy Belly Mindfulness Practice:
Before your food hits your palette PAUSE. Maybe even close your eyes. Take a brief moment to give thanks. Think about the journey your food took to get to your plate – the many hands that helped it get to you, to the moment right before your fork pierces the food. Think about the earth, the sun, and the rain that supported the cultivation of this food. Give thanks. Then eat. Taste each bite. Savor each bite. Chew slowly, mindful of textures and tastes, noticing the subtle differences between each bite. When you eat like this you turn on your body’s parasympathetic nervous system (the rest and digest system) and your digestion is stronger. As a result, your belly will more efficiently break down, absorb, and assimilate the nutrients into your body. Oooh la la life turn on forces at work!
I suggest trying these 5 Prevention Practices for 5 Days. Then, brace yourself for your very own perpetual state of turn on.
I jump out of bed with pep in my step because of these practices. I wasn’t always this way. But, it works. And, my pal prevention and I are pretty certain it will work for you too!
